About this Workshop
Broaden your mechanical skillsets: using reinforcement effectively. Mechanical skill sets are a learned skill that can be developed and improved with practice and allow you to use positive reinforcement effectively. PORTL stands for Portable Operant Research and Teaching Lab, and was developed by Jesús Rosales-Ruiz and Mary Hunter, inspired from tabletop operant games used over the past 15 years by renowned animal trainers such as Kay Laurence. It is an interactive tabletop game in which you work with a partner to practice skills crucial to operant training such as timing, reinforcement delivery, shaping and other principles of learning. You will practice taking data, using a clicker and teaching your human partner some tasks. It also allows us to see the learning from the perspective of the learner and the teacher, and see how your clients may be feeling. This workshop is suitable for beginners new to clicker training, through to advanced trainers/practitioners who benefit from practicing mechanical skills and is suitable for teachers of all species. Whether you work with goldfish, llamas, dogs or humans, practicing skill sets with tabletop games is beneficial for furthering your training, timing and observational skills.
Learning Objectives
At the end of the workshop, workshop attendees will be able to:
Demonstrate precision in reinforcement delivery, including accurate timing and consistent use of conditioned reinforcers (e.g., clicker) during teaching interactions.
Apply shaping procedures effectively by breaking down tasks, reinforcing successive approximations, and adjusting criteria based on learner performance.
Collect and interpret behavioural data during live teaching practice, while using feedback to refine instructional and observational skills from both learner and trainer perspectives.
